About This Location

Takehara Townscape Preservation District is a historic townscape area in Takehara City, Hiroshima Prefecture.

This area preserves the atmosphere of an old merchant town that prospered through salt production and sake brewing during the Edo period. Traditional wooden houses, narrow streets, old storehouses, temples, and historical buildings remain throughout the district.

Takehara is often called “Aki no Kyoto” because of its calm and elegant historical scenery. Compared with Hiroshima City or Miyajima, this area is quieter and less crowded, making it a good place for visitors who want to experience a slower and more local side of Hiroshima.

This is not a large sightseeing area, but it is very suitable for walking, photography, and enjoying the details of traditional Japanese architecture. The streets are especially beautiful in the morning or late afternoon, when the light gives the old buildings a softer atmosphere.

There are also small cafes, museums, sake-related spots, and historic residences nearby, so visitors can spend a relaxed half day exploring the area on foot.

Photographers may enjoy the old walls, lattice windows, tiled roofs, stone paths, and quiet street scenes. The view from the nearby Saihoji Fumeikaku area is also a good spot for seeing the townscape from above.

Recommended time:
Morning to late afternoon

For photographers, Takehara Townscape Preservation District is a peaceful hidden spot for capturing traditional architecture, quiet streets, and the nostalgic atmosphere of old Hiroshima.
