Egesan Observatory / 絵下山展望台

Egesan Observatory is one of the best viewpoints for experiencing the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea around Hiroshima.

Of all the viewpoints overlooking the Seto Inland Sea that I have visited, this is one of my favorites for its exceptionally wide and beautiful view. The scenery changes dramatically depending on the time of day.

The observatory is particularly famous for its sunset views. In summer, around 6:00–6:30 PM is a beautiful time to visit, when the blue waters of the Seto Inland Sea gradually turn golden as the sun sets.

This is also a good example of how different the Seto Inland Sea can look depending on where and when you view it. The islands, sea, and coastline can feel completely different from other viewpoints around Hiroshima.

You can also see Hiroshima City from the mountain, so the location can be enjoyed after sunset as well, with the city lights becoming visible as darkness falls.

The road to the observatory is paved and there is a parking area and a restroom. The mountain road is relatively narrow, around the width of one and a half cars in many sections. However, there are many places where vehicles can pass each other, so driving is generally manageable if you take your time.

If you plan to stay for several hours around sunset and into the evening, bringing food and drinks is a good idea. There are no trash bins at the observatory, so please take all of your rubbish home. A simple convenience-store plastic bag can be used as a trash bag.

絵下山展望台は、広島の瀬戸内海を楽しむことができる、とても眺望の良い展望台です。

私がこれまで見てきた瀬戸内海の展望台の中でも、特に美しく、広い範囲を見渡せる場所の一つです。

特に有名なのが夕景で、夏は18時〜18時30分頃がおすすめです。昼間の青い瀬戸内海が、夕暮れとともに徐々に黄金色へと変化していく様子を見ることができます。

瀬戸内海は、どこから見るか、そして何時に見るかによって、まったく違った景色になります。絵下山は、その違いを実際に楽しむことができる場所です。

また、ここからは広島市街も見ることができるため、日没後には夜景も楽しめます。夕焼けから日没、そして夜景へと、時間の変化とともに景色が変わっていくのも魅力です。

道路は整備されており、駐車場とトイレもあります。トイレは利用できますが、観光地の施設のように綺麗に整備されたものではありません。

展望台へ向かう山道は、場所によって車1.5台分ほどの幅しかありません。ただし、離合できる場所が多いため、ゆっくり運転すれば大きな問題はありません。

夕方から夜まで長時間滞在する場合は、食べ物や飲み物を持っていくのがおすすめです。ただし、ゴミ箱はありません。

残念ながらゴミを置いて帰る人もいますが、この場所を美しく保つためにも、ゴミは必ず持ち帰ってください。コンビニなどでもらうビニール袋をゴミ袋として利用すると便利です。
