About This Location

Yasukuni Jinja is a major Shinto shrine in central Tokyo, founded in 1869. More than 2.46 million people connected with Japan’s wars and national service from the final years of the Edo period through the Pacific War are enshrined here. The spacious grounds include monumental torii gates, the main worship hall, memorial structures, and the Yushukan Museum.

The Yushukan Museum displays letters, personal belongings, historical documents, weapons, military vehicles, and other materials relating to Japan’s modern military history. A complete visit usually takes around one to one and a half hours.

The shrine is also a politically and historically sensitive place. Fourteen people convicted or charged as Class-A war criminals are among those enshrined, and the interpretation of wartime history presented by the shrine and its museum has been the subject of continuing criticism and debate, particularly in Japan’s relations with China and South Korea. Visitors may therefore find it useful to approach Yasukuni both as an active place of worship and as a contested historical site.

The grounds are also well known for cherry blossoms, with approximately 500 cherry trees. One of Tokyo’s official specimen trees used to monitor the blooming of Somei-yoshino cherry blossoms is located here, making the shrine especially popular during spring.

The nearest station is Kudanshita Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai and Hanzomon lines and the Toei Shinjuku Line. The shrine is approximately a five-minute walk from Exit 1. It can also be reached in about ten minutes on foot from Ichigaya or Iidabashi stations.
