About This Location

Alley Karasukojima is a waterfront park in Kure where visitors can see Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force submarines and other naval vessels moored across the water. The submarines can be viewed from surprisingly close range, making this one of Kure’s most distinctive sights and an excellent stop for anyone interested in submarines, naval history, military technology, or photography.

Because this is an active naval base, the number and types of vessels visible will vary depending on operational schedules. The park itself is open and free to enter, but visitors must remain within the public area and avoid obstructing roads, gates, or military facilities.

Nearby, Minatomachi Coffee serves drinks and Kure Maritime Self-Defense Force curry while overlooking the naval waterfront. Hohaikan is housed in a renovated former Imperial Japanese Navy red-brick warehouse and contains historical exhibits, a rest area, and a shop selling local and naval-themed goods.

The coordinates shown on this page intentionally point to the free visitor parking lot rather than the park itself, as the entrance to the parking area can be difficult to locate. From the parking lot, it is approximately a five-minute walk to the waterfront. The parking lot is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is locked after closing, so visitors should return to their vehicle in time.

Visitors without a car can take a bus from JR Kure Station and get off at Sensuitai-mae. The park is about a one-minute walk from the bus stop.
