About This Location

Takagarasudai Observatory and Mitsuda Garden are located near the highest point of Ondo-no-Seto Park, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, the islands of Akinada, and the narrow Ondo Strait. On clear days, the mountains of Shikoku may also be visible in the distance.

The observatory is associated with a famous legend about Taira no Kiyomori. According to the story, while the Ondo Strait was being opened in 1165, Kiyomori raised his fan toward the setting sun and called it back so that the work could be completed before nightfall. A 2.7-meter statue depicts him holding his fan toward the sky.

The surrounding area also contains the remains of a former coastal artillery position, including traces of military buildings and ammunition facilities. Together with the views of the red Ondo bridges and passing vessels, this gives the location an unusual mixture of scenery, legend, and modern history.

Mitsuda Garden lies slightly below the main observatory. It is a distinctive handmade garden filled with unusual trees, stone features, small towers, and a gazebo known as Setomi Observatory. It feels more like a personal local creation than a formally designed Japanese garden, which is part of its charm.

Cats may also be found around the garden, although their presence is naturally not guaranteed. The slightly eccentric garden, historical remains, Kiyomori legend, and expansive sea views make this a more interesting place than a typical observation deck.

Visiting by car is the practical option. From Kure Interchange, the journey takes approximately 40 minutes. Public transportation is possible, but the nearest bus stops still require a steep walk of around 45 minutes to one hour. A small parking area and toilets are available near the upper park.
