About This Location

Located at the summit of Mount Jumonji on Toyoshima Island, this quiet observatory offers panoramic views across the Seto Inland Sea. The unusual eight-meter-high, dome-shaped observation deck provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding islands and sea, making it rewarding both for daytime sightseeing and landscape photography.

The area becomes extremely dark after sunset, making it a particularly appealing location for night-sky and astrophotography. There is little artificial light nearby, but this also means visitors should bring a flashlight when visiting at night. A red-light flashlight is recommended because it makes it easier to preserve your night vision while preparing camera equipment.

Reaching the observatory by car requires caution. The mountain road is paved but very narrow, and there are only limited places where two vehicles can pass. Vegetation may also extend into the road depending on the season. Wildlife, including wild boar, may appear, so drive slowly and remain alert—especially after dark.

A compact vehicle is preferable. Drivers with a wide, low-clearance or especially cherished car may find the approach stressful due to the narrow road and roadside vegetation. The summit has a small free parking area with space for approximately seven vehicles.

The observatory is about one hour by car from Kure Interchange via the Akinada Tobishima Kaido. Public transportation is technically possible, but reaching the summit on foot requires considerable time and effort, so visiting by car is the practical choice.

Photography note
For night photography, arrive before complete darkness so that you can inspect the parking area, paths and observation deck safely. Bring a red flashlight, spare batteries and appropriate footwear. Avoid approaching or feeding wildlife.
