Tatsumi Takes Responsibility for Costly Steal Attempt as Carp Suffer Fifth Straight Loss

Hiroshima Carp pinch runner Konosuke Tatsumi took responsibility after being caught stealing third base in the eighth inning of a 3-0 loss to the DeNA BayStars. Manager Takahiro Arai defended Tatsumi’s aggressive decision, while the coaching staff encouraged him to continue running without fear.

The Hiroshima Toyo Carp suffered their second five-game losing streak of the season on August 8, falling 3-0 to the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and seeing their deficit reach a season-worst 18 games under .500.

One of the game's most important moments came in the eighth inning.

Trailing by just one run, Hiroshima had runners on first and second with one out and the heart of the batting order coming up. Konosuke Tatsumi entered the game as a pinch runner and attempted to steal third.

The attempt failed, turning a promising one-out situation with runners on first and second into two outs with only a runner on first.

Sandro Fabian then flew out to center, ending Hiroshima's threat. DeNA added two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, effectively deciding the game.

Tatsumi did not shy away from responsibility after the game.

“I made the decision myself. I had the feeling that I could make it, so I took off. But the result was an out, so I need to look back on it carefully and learn from it.”

Despite the costly result, manager Takahiro Arai did not criticize his young pinch runner.

“He took off aggressively in that situation. I want him to continue taking those chances without being afraid next time.”

Arai's comments reflect Hiroshima's desire to maintain an aggressive approach on the basepaths, even when it occasionally leads to mistakes.

Outfield and baserunning coach Yoshihiro Akamatsu also defended Tatsumi while emphasizing the need for improvement.

“It's a world of results. Once he gets out, people will naturally say that it affected the next batter, but that's just part of the game. He needs to reflect on it and continue working toward performing at a higher level.”

The defeat overshadowed another encouraging performance from Keniya Suzuki, who made his second start of the season.

Suzuki allowed only one run through five innings before giving up a second run in the sixth. He completed six innings, his longest outing since joining Hiroshima and his first six-inning appearance since June 9, 2023, when he was with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.

The Carp were unable to provide him with any offensive support, however, and their struggles at the plate continued.

For Tatsumi, the failed steal was undoubtedly a painful moment. But with Arai and Akamatsu both encouraging him to remain aggressive, the play may ultimately become an important lesson for a player the Carp hope can develop into a reliable baserunning weapon.
