Hiroshima Carp infielder Taisei Sasaki has transformed his season after struggling early. After batting just .190 through the end of May, Sasaki has hit over .300 in every month since June and has raised his overall batting average to .262.
Hiroshima Toyo Carp infielder Taisei Sasaki has steadily turned his season around after a difficult start, raising his batting average from .190 at the end of May to .262.
Sasaki opened the season as Hiroshima's cleanup hitter, but struggled to produce consistently. His batting order position gradually dropped to sixth and seventh as his average continued to fall.
By the end of May, Sasaki was hitting just .190.
Everything began to change in June.
Sasaki appeared in 14 games that month and hit .300. He became even more productive in July, batting .356 over 18 games.
His resurgence has continued into August.
Sasaki recorded consecutive multi-hit games against the Chunichi Dragons on August 1 and 2. He then followed that with another pair of consecutive multi-hit performances against the Yomiuri Giants on August 5 and 6.
He has already recorded five multi-hit games in August.
His overall batting average has climbed to .262, a dramatic improvement from the .190 mark that once threatened to define his season.
Sasaki is batting .375 in August so far, collecting 12 hits.
There is, however, one notable area still missing from his recent production: extra-base hits.
All 12 of his August hits have been singles, meaning he has yet to record a double, triple or home run this month.
Nevertheless, his improved consistency at the plate is an encouraging sign for Hiroshima.
If Sasaki can maintain his improved ability to make consistent contact while adding extra-base power to his recent production, he could become an increasingly difficult hitter for opposing teams to handle.
For a young player who struggled badly at the beginning of the season, Sasaki's turnaround has become one of the brighter developments of the Carp's summer.
