Kenta Suzuki delivered his longest outing since joining Hiroshima, pitching six innings against DeNA while allowing just one run. However, the Carp could not provide offensive support and suffered a 3-0 shutout loss, their fifth consecutive defeat.
The Hiroshima Toyo Carp suffered a 3-0 shutout loss to the Yokohama DeNA BayStars on August 8, extending their losing streak to five games and dropping them to a season-worst 18 games below .500.
Despite the disappointing result, Kenta Suzuki provided one of the few bright spots for Hiroshima.
Making his second start of the season, Suzuki kept the powerful DeNA lineup off balance with changes in his delivery and timing. He allowed just one run over six innings, giving up five hits while striking out several key hitters.
The only run he allowed came in the fourth inning, when Yoshitomo Tsutsugo hit a solo home run to right field. Suzuki quickly recovered, retiring Ernesto Encarnacion and Hayato Miyazaki to end the inning.
He then retired DeNA in order in the fifth.
In the sixth, Suzuki faced another difficult situation with two outs and runners on first and second, but struck out Encarnacion to escape the inning.
It was the longest outing of Suzuki's Hiroshima career and his first six-inning appearance since June 9, 2023, when he was pitching for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.
Unfortunately for Suzuki, the Carp's offense was unable to provide any support.
Hiroshima had opportunities throughout the game but repeatedly failed to deliver a timely hit. In the second inning, the Carp put runners on first and second with one out but could not score.
In the sixth, Shogo Sakakura and Elfrelys Montero were unable to capitalize with a runner in scoring position.
The biggest opportunity came in the eighth inning.
Trailing by only one run, Hiroshima had runners on first and second with one out and its middle of the order coming to the plate. However, pinch runner Konosuke Tatsumi attempted to steal second and was thrown out.
Manager Takahiro Arai challenged the call, but the ruling was upheld.
The situation changed from one out with runners on first and second to two outs with a runner on first. Sandro Fabian then flew out to center field, ending the threat.
DeNA added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, effectively putting the game out of reach.
The loss marked Hiroshima's 11th shutout defeat of the season and their second five-game losing streak of the year.
While the team's recent results have been extremely difficult, Suzuki's performance offers an important positive development. With injuries forcing Hiroshima to rearrange its pitching staff, a reliable performance from Suzuki could give the Carp another option in the rotation.
The biggest problem on this night was not the starting pitching—it was the lack of offensive support and the inability to capitalize on key opportunities.
