Shigeru Katsuta Earns Praise for Defensive Contributions Despite Offensive Struggles

Hiroshima Carp rookie Shigeru Katsuta has remained with the first team since Opening Day despite struggling at the plate. Former Carp outfielder Soichiro Amaya praised the young infielder's defensive contributions, saying his work with the glove has been outstanding while emphasizing that Katsuta is still in the early stages of his development.

Hiroshima Carp infielder Shigeru Katsuta has struggled offensively this season, but his defensive value has earned strong praise from former Carp outfielder and current broadcaster Soichiro Amaya.

Speaking during radio coverage of Hiroshima's game against the Yomiuri Giants, Amaya highlighted Katsuta's contribution in the field and the fact that the young infielder has remained with the first team throughout the season.

“He's working extremely hard. He's having some difficulties offensively, but I think his contribution on defense has been outstanding.”

Katsuta has continued to play at the first-team level since Opening Day despite hitting in the .100s.

For a young player still developing physically and adjusting to the demands of professional baseball, Amaya believes Katsuta faces a difficult balancing act.

“He's still in the developmental stage, so I think it's difficult to work on building his body while also playing games and trying to train at the same time.”

Rather than expecting Katsuta to immediately become a complete player, Amaya believes the young infielder should gradually establish his own approach and routine.

“I'd like him to keep evolving his own routine every year, while talking to the veteran players around him and learning from them.”

Katsuta's offensive numbers may not stand out yet, but his ability to contribute defensively has allowed him to remain part of Hiroshima's first-team plans.

For a young player learning how to handle the physical and mental demands of a full professional season, the opportunity to continue playing at the top level could prove just as important as his current batting average.

Amaya's comments underline the bigger picture surrounding Katsuta: the Carp are asking a developing player to contribute now, while also giving him the opportunity to build himself into a more complete player for the future.+++
