Morishita Shows Promise in Return as Carp Fall to DeNA

Hiroshima Carp lost a close 2-1 game to the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, but returning starter Masato Morishita delivered an encouraging performance. Manager Takahiro Arai also revealed that Hiroki Tokoda’s shoulder injury was diagnosed as mild inflammation, giving the Carp hope for a relatively quick return.

The Hiroshima Toyo Carp fell 2-1 to the Yokohama DeNA BayStars on August 7, extending their losing streak to three games and bringing their season-high deficit to 16 games.

However, there were some encouraging signs despite the narrow loss, particularly from returning starter Masato Morishita.

Morishita made his first start for the Carp since being sent to the farm team for adjustment in July. He allowed a solo home run to Yoshitomo Tsutsugo in the first inning, but settled down and pitched effectively afterward.

He completed seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four. Although he took the loss, Manager Takahiro Arai was pleased with what he saw.

“Nice pitching,” Arai said. “His fastball was coming out of his hand really well, and because of that, his breaking pitches were good too.”

Morishita had struggled earlier in the season, posting a 5-6 record with a 4.52 ERA before being sent down for adjustment. His strong outing against DeNA suggested that the right-hander may be moving closer to his previous form.

The Carp managed to tie the game in the fourth inning when catcher Shogo Ishihara drove in a run with a single. However, DeNA regained the lead in the sixth when Takaya Toda hit a go-ahead RBI double against Morishita.

Arai summarized the offensive problem simply:

“We were just one hit short.”

There was also positive news regarding Hiroki Tokoda, who was removed from the roster earlier this week because of discomfort in his left shoulder. Medical testing revealed inflammation around the left shoulder joint.

According to Arai, the condition was considered mild, and the Carp are already considering a return in the minimum 10-day period.

“The report was that it was a mild case,” Arai said. “We are also considering the possibility of bringing him back after the minimum 10 days.”

With the Carp struggling to find consistency in the second half of the season, Morishita’s return and the relatively mild diagnosis for Tokoda could provide important reinforcements for the starting rotation.

The result was disappointing, but Hiroshima may have taken a small step toward rebuilding its pitching staff for the long summer stretch.
