Hiroki Tokoda Holds First Contract Talks with Hiroshima Carp Amid Free Agency Speculation: “I’m Not Determined to Leave, but I’m Not Determined to Stay Either”

Hiroshima Carp left-hander Hiroki Tokoda held his first contract discussions with the club on October 27 after becoming eligible for domestic free agency this season. Tokoda, 31, said the Carp had expressed a desire to continue working with him beyond next year. With other teams reportedly interested, he emphasized that he has not decided whether to leave or remain in Hiroshima, and intends to take his time before making a decision.

Hiroshima Carp pitcher Hiroki Tokoda, 31, held his first round of discussions with the club on October 27 regarding his future.

After the meeting, Tokoda said the Carp had made clear that they wanted him to remain with the team.

“They told me they want to keep working with me next year and beyond. Given my age, this is probably my first and last opportunity to exercise free agency, so I want to think it through carefully,” he said.

Tokoda acquired domestic free-agent eligibility this season, and his future has attracted considerable attention.

No contract terms were presented during the meeting. Going forward, his agent is expected to handle most of the negotiations.

Other teams are already reportedly showing interest in the left-hander. However, Tokoda made it clear that he has not made up his mind about his future.

“It’s not that I absolutely want to leave, but it’s not that I absolutely want to stay, either. There’s still time, so I think I’ll take it easy and give it some thought.”

Tokoda left the stadium without revealing which way he was leaning, keeping his thoughts to himself just as he does on the mound.
