Hiroki Tokoda Set to Return to Carp Rotation Against Chunichi After Shoulder Discomfort

Hiroshima Carp left-hander Hiroki Tokoda is set to return to the starting rotation on August 18 against the Chunichi Dragons after missing time with left shoulder discomfort. Tokoda has gone through additional conditioning and two bullpen sessions and hopes to help the Carp finish the game with a victory.

Hiroshima Carp left-hander Hiroki Tokoda is set to make his return to the starting rotation on August 18 against the Chunichi Dragons.

Tokoda, 31, has been working his way back after experiencing discomfort in his left shoulder. His upcoming start will be his first appearance since July 31, when he also faced Chunichi.

During his recovery, Tokoda continued to build up his workload with demanding conditioning exercises, including running along the warning track and sprinting up the stadium stairs. He has also completed two bullpen sessions ahead of his return.

Although his comeback was delayed, Tokoda believes the additional time ultimately benefited him.

He said that the extended gap between starts allowed him to push himself further in his preparation and that he hopes to turn the delay into a positive.

The timing of his return is particularly important for Hiroshima.

The Carp currently trail fifth-place Chunichi by just one game, making the August 18 matchup an important opportunity to gain ground in the standings.

Tokoda has performed well against the Dragons this season. In three appearances, he has posted a 1–0 record with a 2.00 ERA.

However, one Chunichi hitter has caused him particular trouble.

Tokoda has allowed a .300 batting average to Chunichi slugger Hosokawa. Despite that, Hosokawa has yet to hit a home run against him this season.

Tokoda said his main priority will be avoiding the long ball.

For Tokoda, the individual statistics are secondary to the team's result.

He explained that whenever he starts, his main goal is simply to have the team win by the end of the game.

After a difficult stretch for Hiroshima, the return of one of the team's key left-handed starters could provide a significant boost to the pitching staff.

With the Carp trying to climb out of last place and close the gap on the teams above them, Tokoda's return comes at a crucial point in the season.

Now he will look to turn his long-awaited return into a victory against the Dragons.
