Hiroshima suffered a 4-3 walk-off loss to the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in 12 innings, extending its losing streak to four games and dropping the Carp to a season-worst 17 games under .500. Despite another late collapse, Yuta Saito showed improvement and Shogo Sakakura hit a go-ahead home run.
The Hiroshima Toyo Carp suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 walk-off loss to the Yokohama DeNA BayStars on August 8, extending their losing streak to four games and pushing their season record to a new low of 17 games below .500.
The loss once again highlighted the Carp's difficult situation in the bullpen, with several key pitchers currently unavailable.
Starter Yuta Saito, however, showed a significant improvement from his previous outing.
Saito, who had allowed five runs in four innings against the Chunichi Dragons on August 1, bounced back with a much stronger performance. He opened the game with three strikeouts, including consecutive strikeouts to begin the game, and allowed just one hit through the first three innings.
He gave up two runs over five innings, both coming on extra-base hits, but managed to limit the damage and keep Hiroshima within striking distance.
The Carp's offense then came alive in the sixth inning.
After two consecutive walks forced DeNA to replace starter Shino Ki, Hiroshima loaded the bases. Shunichi Noma drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the first run, and Keisuke Sato followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
In the seventh, Shogo Sakakura put Hiroshima ahead with a solo home run to left-center field.
However, the lead did not hold.
In the eighth inning, Taichi Ko gave up a solo home run to DeNA's Ernesto Encarnacion, tying the game at 3-3 and sending the contest into extra innings.
After neither team could score in the ninth through 11th innings, Hiroshima turned to reliever Makoto Aduwa for his second consecutive inning in the 12th.
With no outs, Yoshitomo Tsutsugo hit a walk-off home run, giving DeNA the 4-3 victory.
It was the second consecutive game in which Hiroshima surrendered a decisive run late in the game. The Carp also lost to the Yomiuri Giants on August 6 after giving up seven runs over the final three innings.
Hiroshima's bullpen has been under increasing pressure following injuries to several pitchers. Key reliever Taylor Hearn remains sidelined, while starter Hiroki Tokoda was recently removed from the roster with inflammation around his left shoulder.
With Kanya Suzuki now being moved into the starting rotation, the shortage of available relief pitchers has become an increasingly serious problem.
Despite the disappointing result, there were positive signs. Saito showed that he could respond after a poor outing, while Sakakura continued to provide offensive production with another important home run. Sasaki Ta also contributed by reaching base during the sixth-inning rally.
But with the Carp now four games below their previous season-low winning percentage and 17 games under .500, the team faces an increasingly difficult challenge in the second half of the season.
With the bullpen stretched thin and several key players unavailable, Hiroshima's ability to stabilize its pitching staff may determine whether the Carp can remain within reach of the Central League's playoff race.
