The Hiroshima Carp defeated the Hanshin Tigers 5-2 at Mazda Stadium, winning consecutive games against the league leaders and securing their first series win in four series. Shogo Sakakura delivered the go-ahead RBI, while Kaito Fabian blasted a huge two-run homer. Yuta Saito earned his second win of the season, and the bullpen shut down Hanshin over the final four innings.
The Hiroshima Toyo Carp completed a two-game sweep of the Hanshin Tigers on August 15, defeating the league leaders 5-2 at Mazda Stadium.
The victory gave Hiroshima back-to-back wins for the first time in a difficult stretch and secured the team's first series win in four series. The Carp improved their record to just three games below .500 from their recent low point, but more importantly, they continued to show signs of life against the league-leading Tigers.
Starting pitcher Yuta Saito overcame an early two-run home run by Hanshin's Teruaki Sato and settled down to deliver five innings of three-hit, two-run baseball.
Hanshin struck first in the opening inning.
After leadoff hitter Koji Chikamoto reached on an infield single and Shota Nakano moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt, Yugo Morishita launched his 29th home run of the season into the left-center field stands.
Hiroshima immediately responded.
Kozono and Ryosuke Kikuchi opened the bottom of the first with consecutive singles. After Ernesto Montero reached on a fielder's choice, Shogo Sakakura grounded into a double-play attempt, allowing Hiroshima to score and cut the deficit to 2-1.
Saito then settled into a rhythm.
He struck out Maekawa and Sakamoto consecutively in the second inning before retiring Motoyama on a ground ball. He also worked a clean third inning against Hanshin's heart of the order.
Hiroshima finally took control in the third.
Saito helped himself with his first professional hit, a single into center field. After Kozono was retired, Kikuchi doubled into left-center field to put runners on second and third.
Montero then grounded out, bringing home the tying run.
Sakakura followed with a single to left field, driving in Kikuchi and putting Hiroshima ahead 3-2.
Saito completed five innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four without issuing a walk. It was his second win of the season.
The Carp's bullpen then took over.
Kento Okamoto, making his second relief appearance of the season, worked a scoreless sixth inning. Yuki Endo followed with a perfect seventh.
In the eighth, Hiroya Takahashi found himself in trouble after Hanshin put runners on first and second with one out. He retired Nakano on a ground ball and then walked Morishita to load the bases with two outs.
Facing Teruaki Sato with the game hanging in the balance, Takahashi induced a ground ball to shortstop to escape the inning without allowing a run.
That proved crucial because Hiroshima had already added insurance in the sixth.
With one out, Shogo Akiyama singled against Hanshin reliever Yudai Yuasa. Fabian then attacked the very first pitch he saw, a 145-km/h fastball, and absolutely crushed it.
The ball sailed over the left-field stands for a massive two-run homer, his 15th of the season, extending Hiroshima's lead to 5-2.
The Carp had another opportunity in the eighth, with Fabian drawing a walk and Tai Sasaki following with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Takaki Ishihara put runners on second and third, but Hiroshima could not add another run.
In the ninth, closer Daisuke Moriura finished the game to record his 14th save of the season.
After suffering through a six-game losing streak, Hiroshima has now responded with consecutive victories over the best team in the Central League.
The Carp's offense is beginning to show signs of life, while the bullpen has successfully protected leads in both games.
With the Tigers coming into Mazda Stadium as the league leaders, winning two straight against them could prove to be an important turning point for a team that has spent much of the season searching for momentum.
