Arai Encourages Mori After Loss: “I Want Him to Break Through”

Despite a 4–0 loss to the Yomiuri Giants, Hiroshima Toyo Carp manager Takahiro Arai expressed confidence in left-hander Shohei Mori, saying he hopes the young pitcher can “break through” and take the next step in his development.

The Hiroshima Toyo Carp fell 4–0 to the Yomiuri Giants at Mazda Stadium, missing the chance to earn their first three-game winning streak since Opening Week.

Left-hander Shohei Mori delivered four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fifth, allowing three runs. He recovered to finish seven innings, helping preserve the bullpen despite taking the loss.

After the game, manager Takahiro Arai praised Mori’s resilience while encouraging further growth.

“I want him to break through that barrier. He knows what he needs to improve. Even if you allow a run, limiting the damage gives the team a chance to come back.”

Arai also appreciated Mori’s ability to complete seven innings after the difficult fifth inning.

“He settled down and gave us seven innings. I’m looking forward to his next start.”

Offensively, Hiroshima collected eight hits, one more than the Giants, but failed to score. The Carp repeatedly hit the ball hard but could not deliver timely hits with runners on base.

Arai remained positive despite the shutout.

“We hit a lot of balls well. Their pitcher is very good.”

The manager also confirmed that Aduwa Makoto, who recently returned to the bullpen, is currently expected to serve in a long-relief role.

Looking ahead to August 6, the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Arai reflected on the significance of the day.

“It’s a very special day. We’re grateful for the opportunity to play baseball.”

The Carp will look to bounce back while carrying that message of gratitude into one of the most meaningful days of the year in Hiroshima.
