Akihiro Akiyama’s Go-Ahead Home Run Caps Special Day for Invited Families

Shogo Akiyama hit a dramatic go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning as the Hiroshima Toyo Carp defeated the Chunichi Dragons 4–3. The victory came on a day when Akiyama hosted single-parent families at Mazda Stadium as part of his long-running community outreach program.

Veteran outfielder Shogo Akiyama delivered a memorable moment on and off the field as the Hiroshima Toyo Carp defeated the Chunichi Dragons 4–3 at Mazda Stadium.

Trailing by one run in the eighth inning with two outs and a runner on first, Akiyama launched a go-ahead two-run home run into the right-center field stands. It was his third home run of the season and proved to be the game-winning hit.

After the game, Akiyama explained that he trusted his instincts rather than swinging for power.

“I wasn’t trying to hit a home run. I just had a feeling that pitch was coming, and I was ready to attack it.”

The victory helped Hiroshima avoid falling to the bottom of the Central League standings and secured the club’s first winning series in six matchups.

Manager Takahiro Arai praised the veteran’s decisive contribution.

“It was a tremendous home run. The packed crowd really came alive, and it was a wonderful moment for everyone at the stadium.”

The game was especially meaningful because Akiyama had invited 13 single-parent families, including 30 parents and children, to the ballpark as part of a community support program he has continued since 2015.

Before the game, he spent time meeting the families, signing autographs, and taking photos.

Akiyama’s commitment to the program is deeply personal. He lost his father to illness while in elementary school and was raised by his mother.

Following the victory, he reflected on what made the day so special.

“I’m really happy it turned out this way. Because of this event, I wanted to show everyone at least one good moment at the plate.”

His dramatic home run not only lifted the Carp to victory but also gave the invited families a memorable experience—one that reflected the values of perseverance, gratitude, and giving back that have defined Akiyama throughout his career.
